Service: Service Self-Assessment

2) Service Self-Assessment
University Service
I have served on the University IT Committee for the past five years. I also served on the Academic Affairs Committee, which I recently stepped down from, due to faculty load constraints. During the summer, I have been the key contact person for making sure software was ordered, received and delivered to appropriate faculty and computers. I was appointed by former Vice President for Academic Affairs, Bryon Grigsby to serve on the Blackboard Committee, which is now the Technology Liaisons Committee, which I continue to serve on. We offer training sessions for faculty in various technologies related training classes and one-to-one sessions. I have also given countless hours to help students and faculty throughout the University with computer hardware, software, sound and general technology related issues.

I have consulted on many sound projects and set-up needs at SU from concert set-ups, sound for May graduation and sound in the Ferrari room to name just a few. These activities along with those described above demonstrate my commitment to serving the University and Conservatory community at an advanced level and are in line with my personal philosophy of the importance of service.

Every year I have been at SU I have been heavily involved in sound reinforcement, recording and sound production to help produce the Holiday celebration programs, once at the Strathmore and now in Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre. I have also assisted in mixes for the audio which resulted in a few broadcasts over the years.

Conservatory Service
I have served on the search committee for percussion faculty position, which resulted in the appointment of Earl Yowell; and guitar faculty which resulted in the appointment of Julian Grey; on a NASM self-study committee with Byron Jones and Jeff Marlatt. During my ten years teaching at Shenandoah University I have served  on the Holiday Gala committee mixing sound for both live and TV broadcast, recording, sound-staging and so forth. In the future I hope to continue serving the University where possible.

I have also lent my professional expertise to the reconstruction of Shenandoah’s recording studio, and other needs, a task that, in conjunction with my colleague Golder O’Neil, required an entire summer’s work and which saved the University thousands of dollars in external contractual fees.

Service to Students
In addition to all this I have given many hours working as an advisor for more than a dozen students annually. Before Degree Audit became a reality, I worked long hours setting up a system much like it to help our students track their academic progress. I have also created a forum where students can find information in a centralized location for information regarding their degree and advising.  In this forum students can help and give insight to others in the Music Production & Recording Technology (MPRT) program through things they have discovered. I also partner with other Jazz and MPRT faculty to offer group advising with some extra incentive of drinks and pizza. It is my hope that this provides the students with a richer experience while at Shenandoah University.

I have donated many hours to helping set up "SU Upstream Radio" (student led radio). I worked with MPRT student Haden Olmsted to help set up audio hardware and software routing, and assisted in optimizing the software and network audio streaming. I also developed the Mac app for the radio station and an accompanying app for Mike Maher's show that would automatically add to your calendar when his show would start and open up the Internet SU radio to play when his show came on. I also created a Mac application to directly open "SU Upstream Radio" in iTunes.

Quality advising requires keeping up-to-date with course changes, software advising changes, attending advisor training meetings, student/advisor communication, etc., all of which are essential for helping students stay on track throughout their study at Shenandoah.

Service to my Profession
Beyond my Shenandoah teaching, have taught many courses in Pro Tools to people in the industry, given multiple training sessions at home recording studios and published online tutorials as can be seen in my CV.  In addition, I have developed a certification course for Steinberg’s Cubase, which Focal Press has requested for publication. I also recently published a chapter in the book Modern MIDI, have published an article with Mike Sokol for electrical magazines on studio wiring, and presented a paper and paneled a discussion at the International Education Audio Engineering Society (AES) conference. I am also active in recording and editing albums for the local classical record label Sono Luminus.

Service in the Community
As a member of the Winchester community, I am active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we are given various service assignments. I've worked with the Webelos Cub Scouts (10-year-olds) helping them gain useful skills, a love for God, and to build a Christ-like character in finding joy through engaging in genuine selfless service to others. I also co-teach nine and ten year old girls and boys in Sunday school classes and have been involved in music production of the broader Shenandoah area of the church. In addition I have also spent a number of years working on a weekly basis with teenage youth at the church.

Since 2007, I have taught guitar, computer skills, digital audio workstations and audio lessons through the Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy, providing young people in the Winchester community the opportunity to receive quality training in these highly specialized skills.
