Service: Description of School/University Service Activities

3) Description of School/University Service Activities
It is my belief that voluntary service is vital to health and prosperity of an institution. Below I have outlined some of the activities in which I played a role in building the strength of the Conservatory and University.

University Committees & Service

2015–Current - Shenandoah University - Winchester, VA
Tech Liaisons Committee
My role on this committee is to help faculty keep up to date with technology changes. I was appointed to this committee by Michael Stepniak and Anne Marchant. This committee has now replaced the former Blackboard Committee helping faculty members with their Canvas needs.

2006–Current - Shenandoah University - Winchester, VA
Holiday Gala
Perhaps one of the most joyous committees I serve on is the Holiday Gala committee. It has been a pleasure serving each year with so many people in and out of the Conservatory to facilitate such a large production in such a short amount of time. The Gala requires a great deal of pre-production for such a collaborative event, and the leadership we serve under is wonderful. The Gala committee meetings start as early as January to prepare for the following December performance. Recordings, microphone placement, equipment, schedules, the practicality of vision, and other logistics all have to be considered and worked through before the performance. I have served on this committee since my first year at Shenandoah University which was at Strathmore, every year following has been in Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre. From 2006-2011 my primary focus during the gala performance was recording and mixing audio. From 2012-2015 I have been the head mixing engineer for the live sound performance.

2016 - Shenandoah University - Winchester, VA
Academic Affairs
While serving on this committee my primary focus was on the Faculty Senate Portal, in particular I worked on improving the "Faculty Evaluation" section. On this committee, I worked directly with Brian Lipscomb in creating a repository for faculty evaluation material on the Canvas Faculty Senate-Portal. We created a place to be maintained by schools to include faculty requirements for promotion, formulated a consistent structure for all other pages to follow for consistency such as the Faculty Development, Teaching Scholarship, Service and others.

2009–2014 - Shenandoah University - Winchester, VA
Blackboard Committee
I have served on the Blackboard Committee since it was first conceived by Dr. Bryon Grigsby helping faculty, particularly in the Conservatory, with their needs in using Blackboard and other technology needs.

2009–2014 - Shenandoah University - Winchester, VA
IT Committee
While serving on the IT committee, I was able to give some continuity from year to year to assist in the original and ongoing forms used for faculty to obtain software they need through University funding when funds were not available through the program, division or school funds. I worked with Quaiser Absar and Alissa Cornell in purchasing and distributing software that had been approved. During my time on the committee, I helped to create a centralized location for University site licenses and extra installation codes. The year I left the committee, we were finally able to have approved a more streamlined process where funds were approved for software within months rather than waiting until the following academic year.

2006–2007 - Shenandoah University - Winchester, VA
NASM Self-Study Committee
I served with Byron Jones and Jeff Marlatt while on this committee.

2011–2012 - Shenandoah University - Winchester, VA
Service in the Community
I worked directly with Karen Shultz to help organize sites and groups for Shenandoah University’s service in the community day during these years the groups were offered. We took a group of students to help clean and organize an old church that had been converted to a studio to help students also benefit by working with people in their chosen field.

Conservatory Committees & Service

2009–Current - Shenandoah University - Winchester, VA
Mac Lab
The Conservatory Mac Lab serves as a creative and scholarly location that provides students with such software as Sibelius, Pro Tools, Logic, Final Cut Pro, Ableton Live, Reason, and MS Office, to name a few. There are anywhere from 14 to 20 work study students that I help to oversee. There are always updates and things to be fixed or improved upon. After long awaited approved funding in the fall of 2015 and spring of 2016 there were several improvements made in the Mac Lab to both the displays that are used for teaching and how the desks and cables were laid out, creating a much cleaner environment. There was minor carpentry involved including drilling holes and routing cables to improve the safety of the patrons and equipment. I meet with other faculty and work study supervisors to provide training to all the work study students; we are in regular communication to help meet the needs of the lab and other scheduling needs. There has often been time given during the summer helping with doctoral exams, and camps such as the National Jazz Workshop that also use this lab. I have worked with Anne Marchant, Karen Walker, Jeff Piotter, Daniel Copher, Aimé Sposato, Valerie Gangwer, Quaiser Absar and many others on ways to improve the Mac Lab in Ruebush 111 for better student learning.

2009–Current - Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy - Winchester, VA
SCAA
I have contributed to the service at the University with outreach lessons through SCAA (Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy) in both Guitar and Audio recording. I have also given general lessons on Mac computer use for people 70 and over in the Shenandoah University Mac lab through the SCAA.
